Starting August 26th, everyone can browse an unprecedented piece of Flemish press history online at hetarchief.be . The platform brings together more than 180,000 newspaper editions from approximately 900 titles . Many of these are free and easily searchable, including a special section from Amsab-ISG's own newspaper collection.

Announcement of newspaper access to hetarchief.be

With newspaper collections from 20 different organizations hetarchief.be is the ideal starting point for anyone who wants to consult newspapers, from researchers and teachers to journalists and curious readers. Thanks to intelligent text recognition (OCR), you can also search for keywords in the articles. This way, you can quickly find people, places, or events. If, during your search, you come across a more recent newspaper that is still under copyright, you can easily request it from the organization that provided it.

The digital accessibility of these newspapers, combined with text recognition, is of great social importance. It makes it possible to track the evolution of society, culture, and politics over the decades and offers an indispensable resource for research, education, and journalism. Whether you want to research your own family history, look back on local events, or unearth past social trends: the material is readily available.

This project is particularly special for Amsab-ISG: 15 of the most vulnerable titles from our collection, digitized in the GIVE newspaper digitization project Primeur , are available and searchable digitally for the first time on this platform. This includes no fewer than 84,886 pages from issues of publications such as De diamantbewerker (The Diamond Worker) , De volksstem (The People , and older volumes of Voor Allen (For All). Newspapers published during the First World War and previously digitized in the Nieuws van de Groote Oorlog (News of the Great War) 12,000 issues are available online.
